Canucks Clinch Playoff Spot with Gutsy 4-3 Win in Slough
Match reportsThe Cardiff Canucks clinched a playoff spot with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the Slough Spitfires on Saturday evening, bouncing back from recent losses to secure the result they needed. Playing short-benched once again due to injuries, Cardiff showed character to hold off a late Slough push and complete the season double over their hosts.
The Canucks were well supported on the road, with a large contingent of away fans making the trip and making plenty of noise throughout the evening to back their team.
John Dibble returned to the lineup in goal, and his presence proved crucial as Cardiff navigated a physical, high-penalty affair from start to finish.
Cardiff got off to the perfect start with Zak Shanahan opening the scoring to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead. Slough responded to tie things up in the second period, but Carter Lloyd quickly restored Cardiff's advantage. Joe Morris then produced one of the goals of the season, deking around a Slough defender on the power play before firing the puck top corner with a lovely finish in the offensive end to make it 3-1.
Slough pulled one back with a minute remaining in the second period, and Cardiff took a 3-2 lead into the final frame. The third period saw plenty of penalties for both sides in what remained a physical contest. With five minutes to play and Cardiff on the power play, Joe Tearall found the back of the net to extend the lead to 4-2.
Slough mounted a late comeback, scoring with two minutes remaining to bring the score to 4-3. They pulled their netminder for the extra attacker in the dying moments, but Cardiff held firm to see out the victory.
Shanahan was named Man of the Match for his goal and overall performance, while Dibble earned the Canucks' Cowboy Hat award for a solid display in net on his return to the lineup.

The result clinches a playoff spot for Cardiff with two regular season games remaining — both away fixtures against Milton Keynes and Haringey. Crucially, either of those opponents could be Cardiff's first-round playoff opponent when the postseason begins on March 28th, adding extra edge to the final games of the regular season.
